Team competitions for Jumping riders, called Nations Cups, exist since 1909. Since 1965 the then fourteen Nations Cups were united in an annual classification. But it took the FEI, the International Equestrian Federation until the mid eighties before they allowed prize money to be paid in a Nations Cup.

A few years later, the Italian Fashion house of Gucci became sponsor of the Nations Cup series. Max E. Ammann was its manager as from 1989 and he became a member of the FEI Nations Cup Committee. When the Dutch computer company HCS took over the sponsorship of the Nations Cup series, Max E. Ammann remained its Director.

When, in 1996 the Korean multi Samsung became the sponsor of the Nations Cup series with a multi million agreement, Max E. Ammann became part of the three persons Steering Committee, as well as member of the FEI Nations Cup Committee. His company network4events (former Editions Hippiques) was also contracted by Samsung to take care of the external communication and the relation to the organisers.

In the nineties the number of Nations Cup doubled. In 1998 we counted thirty-one. Max E. Ammann was leading in the efforts to give a new structure to the Nations Cups. As from 2003, the Nations Cups were divided in a Super League and a Nations Prize Series.

The top eight nations formed the Super League, which met at the eight top European events. At the Final in Barcelona (ESP), the eight teams could win double points. The last placed in the Super League was relegated to the Nations Prize Series – the winner of the Nations Prize Series moved up.
